IWF BC News - June 2021

As June promises the start of a summer that may see us return to a pre-COVID
lifestyle with a chance to increase our bubble, hug our friends and meet in person, I
find myself reflecting on what ‘building back better’ means. This is the call to action
prevalent throughout the industry I am closest to – tourism. I was recently asked to
speak on this topic to a group of my industry peers and came across these two quotes
that resonated with me

IWF BC News - May 2021

May kicks off with our bi-coastal Cocktail Café on May 6th, where we have invited our Caribbean sisters to join us. The Member Engagement Committee is thrilled that we will be hosting over 22 “cafes”, each with 8 members representing BC, Washington, Oregon, Northern & Southern Californian, Bermuda, Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica! Thank you to our BC hosts – Diana Barkley, Barbara Mowat, Barbara Ross-Denroche and Carol Jones for stepping up to host. I look forward to hearing about all the great conversations that take place. These virtual gatherings are filling our hearts & minds until we can again meet in person.

Congratulations to the events committee for hosting the Women in Media panel discussion in February.  It was both inspiring and insightful.  Member Bridgitte Anderson did a fantastic job moderating and exploring the constantly changing roles women hold in journalism today.

Your Board of Directors met for its annual strategy session this week. Many thanks to
our fellow member Michelle Rupp for her excellent facilitation of the workshop. Our
primary focus was to review the ways we provide value to our IWF BC members and
how we could be doing better. More than 20 members responded to our short survey
which provided us with some fantastic ideas with which to work.

IWF BC News - Jan 2021

It’s a new year – and while I like to set goals and intentions, I am finding this challenging as so much is still unknown. My word for the year is “listen” – as stress can lead me to talk too much and forget to be fully aware of the world around me as I try and buy time to figure it all out. I am so thankful for the engagement committee’s continuing efforts and I look forward to Connex where I can listen and learn from all of you.

As we head into November and the holiday season, it is hard to think of celebrating, especially as new gathering restrictions have been put in place by our health authorities.  It is more important than ever to find reasons to smile and feel hope.  Here are a few things that a serving as lights at the end of my tunnel.

While the novelty of ZOOM calls has worn off, even with the multitude of backdrops to choose from, the Western Region Dine Around this past week was a highlight for many of us. One of IWF BC’s goals is to strengthen our connections across the Western Region, with the IWF Leadership Conference in Seattle 2021 on the horizon, and this initiative provided an excellent opportunity to do just that. See summary from Nancy Laughton below.

IWF BC News - Apr 2020

When I wrote the last update to members, COVID-19 was just a potential black cloud on
the horizon. When reality took shape and social distancing became mandatory, I began
receiving notes from every business who has my email saying, “we are here for you”.
While getting over the disappointment of the London Cornerstone Conference being
cancelled, at first I appreciated the sentiment, but now it is getting to be annoying. Really x
online retailer, you are there for me by offering me 25% off and trying to encourage me to
spend money I don’t have?
